Tank Cylinder Visual Inspection & Hydro Test

VISUAL INSPECTION

The Visual Inspection (VIP) is intended to demonstrate to the scuba industry, a need to meet and exceed the minimum standards. Its Legal requirements, standards of the community
Visual Inspection – Once a Year

There tests performed to discover bulges, dents, and measure scratch depths on the exterior; if any flaw is determined to be capable of compromising the diver’s safety, the cylinder is condemned, valve thread and marked as such.
The internal inspection will be looking out for any signs of pitting or corrosion. If pitting is found, it will be measured to decide whether it renders the tank unusable. If corrosion is found, the technician puts the tank into a process called “tumbling”, wherein an abrasive material is inserted into the cylinder, and then spun around for a length of time until the corrosion has been removed.
The valve thread will be inspected for corrosion, cracks, or loss of metal. Since the valve is what controls your airflow from the cylinder to your lungs, you would do well to keep the thread clean and properly maintenance between dives. Recommend to do VIP at least 2.5 Years (Personal tank) or Every Year (for Dive Operator) to monitor the corrosion inside the cylinder and within the cylinder thread.
Most dive shops will not perform air fills without a sticker that displays that your inspection is current.

HYDRO TEST

Hydro Test – Once Every 5 Years

Testing performed on your air tank that is required by federal law. Hydrostatic testing is mandated and regulated on such a high level for public safety. While SCUBA air tanks are made of durable metals, there are inherent dangers in dealing with highly pressurized gases within a metal missile. Compromised tanks can not only cause trouble underwater, they can cause damage and injury if one is dropped or happens to tear.
